Is dress code the answer to eve-teasing?

In the recent past there has been talk about enforcing a dress code for college girls. In fact, some colleges in Kanpur, Hyderabad and Lucknow have already done so. The college authorities banned jeans, sleeveless blouses and even high heels after receiving several complaints of eve-teasing that were occurring just outside the college gate.

The reason they stated for taking this step is that they think that western outfits make women more vulnerable to eve teasing. Like many students who protested against this decision, I too found the idea ridiculous.

First of all I’d like to tell those people who are under the above misconception that girls who wear Salwars or Sarees too have been victims of eve-teasing. I don’t remember me or my friends ever dressing provocatively but I can state umpteen cases where we faced indecent behaviour from men on the roads.

Vulgarity is in the mind so even the girls wearing right attire can attract wrong attention. I accept the fact that, what women wear does matter. If a woman wears a daring outfit, she will arouse attention even in the most liberal surroundings, forget the traditional ones.

But the restrictions that have been put on women are outrageous. Instead of punishing the wrongdoers the ignorant heads of the institution are trying to impose a dress code on girls stating safety as the highly unacceptable excuse. If this be the case then how do they explain the fact that though women in the west are less conservative when it comes to clothes but still cases of eve-teasing or crime against women are far less there as compared to here?

If dressing in denims or tight tops or wearing high heels be a reason for women getting abused then, it’s a big shame on the Indian guys that they simply can’t control their libido when they see women in these perfectly decent outfits. If these loose-morale men can’t restrain their carnal hunger, it’s their fault but the authorities instead of trying to round up these brutes are attacking girls’ freedom at a futile attempt to curb women-harassment.

How unfortunate isn’t it... that the offenders are getting away scot free and the victims i.e us are getting punished instead, what’s our crime? we are girls and unfortunately the better looking sex. That’s fair enough? oh but I forgot from when have things ever been fair for the fair sex?

Won’t it be a much more effective way of dealing with the problem if the college authorities sit down with police and other officials to formulate a strategy to check the menace e.g. they could position policemen in front of the college to keep the goons at bay.

Let us not live under the illusion that dress codes will lessen the existing violence. Perverts will always be around. If the college authorities are indeed so concerned about the safety of women why not organize classes to teach the girls martial arts to save their skin.

I admit college is an academic institution and students should exercise a bit of thoughtfulness while putting on clothes for college. But why should this rule be confined only to the girls? Personally speaking in my college, I haven’t come across a single vulgarly clad girl but I have come across guys who come to college wearing clothes appearing as if they have come rite out of a disco and have headed straight for college.

Some of them do not even bother to button up their shirts and the worst of all, I have even seen guys wearing extremely low jeans exposing their underwear (I don’t know what they are trying to become, a twisted version of Hrithik Roshan ”Macroman”),trust me it really wasn’t a very attractive sight.

If this is another of those attempts made by guys to look dashing or cool I’d like to inform them that they have miserably failed this time too and kindly don’t cause sight pollution. I’d like to conclude by saying that such strict dress codes are extremely unnecessary and implementation of those would do nothing to check eve-teasing.

So. it’s enough that the colleges issue a notice requesting students to wear decent and presentable clothes while coming to college. I am sure as responsible and sensible adults they would comply by it.

The way beauty lies in the eyes of beholder, same goes for vulgarity. People who are sick in their minds will be sick, weather you wear sari, salwar kameez, jeans or skirt.

This topic has been raised many times and i would say one thing.

Some of your colleges have started a dress code, right? If eve teasing have stopped for students of those particular institute(which i'm sure will not be the case), then definitely girl's dresses are to be blamed. If not, the institutes heads should stop flaunting their foolishness.

Of course, the men misbehaving with women should be punished and not the women themselves. This is not fair. Jeans are not vulgar.

Dress code or no dress code, women should draw a line themselves, and necessary exposure should be avoided at all cost.As for eve teasing, women should themselves be empowered enough to
deal with such elements.

Great! Each woman should be empowered enough to deal with a group of boys teasing her on the streets. God have to make some biological changes in woman and give her twice or thrice the muscular power of a man. I'll definitely send an application to heaven for this.

Boys as usual cannot hold their horses and the police keeps sleeping and the institutes would keep banning the woman from wearing this and that.

Tomorrow women would also be punished for being raped as in Saudi Arabia. Great going India... what a capable nation we have.

Eve teasing is certainly a bad thing but then what’s the harm in taking preventive measures to stop it including dress code ?

If you really want the dress codes implemented, then why only for women. I suppose we should also get back to our traditional dresses like 'kurta-payjama' or 'kurta dhoti'.

@Chintan

I am only trying to suggest that let both the sexes move out in proper dresses.I don’t think that means getting attired in traditional dress!! As far as eve teasing is concerned there is also something called Adam teasing !!

Your logic prima facie is a wrong one. There are so many police officers in a district working in different sections.Yet,murder, loot, theft and etc. are taking place daily. So we should have no police officials at all :-)

I don’t know why u people are wasting your time discussing on this issue. The answer has already been given by Nitesh in a very short and clear statement.

Ironically, the very first comment on the article is the only rational one too. Rest are all jotted by members to hammer their own thoughts into each other’s heads.

The way beauty lies in the eyes of beholder, same goes for vulgarity. People who are sick in their minds will be sick, weather you wear sari, salwar kameez, jeans or skirt.

Nice to see you comment after a very long time.Where were you all these days ?

There is certainly tinge of rationality in words of Nitesh and it’s not surprising that you endorse it.My only objection is that it contradicts reality. It’s not only matter of perception but also something associated closely with the drastic changes in behaviour of both men and women in our times.

I too believe that ”beauty lies in the eyes of beholder” and it’s a quote that I always hear in debates of this type. However, one fails to go ahead and realize that we are living in age of distortions wherein ”our sense of beauty is so bruised and blunted, we miss all the best’

Presenting excerpts from an article that I read recently on this site. It’s not related with issue in discussion but a close reading of it definitely makes the quoted excerpts very much part of the whole debate.

**************************************

Sexy calendars and pictures of topless models in tabloid newspapers really do lead men to think of women as objects, research shows.

Overall, the experiments showed that sexy images lead men to think of women as ’less than human’, the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual conference heard.

Professor Fiske, of Princeton University in the U.S., said the effect could spill over into the workplace, with girlie calendars leading men to sexualise their colleagues.

**************************************** After reading it please don’t state that on Indian roads the Indian women don’t move like ”topless models” or roam in bikini etc.

Anyway, the day is not far when we will have more Indian girls following the footsteps of topless models and we all be asked to heed to ”beauty lies in the eyes of beholder” !!
