How true are we as Indians?

We Indians have a habit of putting the blame of anything happening or anything not happening on our Government. But do we stop to ask ourselves before cursing our whole system that’s it people like us who make the Government not some alien coming from outer space.

And another big question I would like to put forward in this context is it solely the Government’s responsibility that the country is run properly. Don’t get me wrong I am not trying to exonerate the Government, it definitely has a responsibility towards our country, towards us and there is no doubt they are not efficient enough but don’t we have a duty towards the smooth running of the system too?

How can we expect the ministry consisting of a few hundreds of people rule properly a country of millions unless we co-operate and partake our responsibilities as citizens of this country. We see dustbins on the road but still drop the waste on roads, we see banners telling ”DON’T SPIT HERE”, but we ignore it and then when we look at the clean roads of foreign countries we make a wry face and make comments like ”the roads of India my GOD, they are totally disgusting strewn with rubbish, dirty and stinky!” and blame everyone starting from the municipality to the sweeper, funny isn’t it?

We see family planning techniques being aired continuously on radio, television, even written on hoardings but we don’t bother to follow it and then sneer at the exploding population of our country. We don’t follow traffic rules, drive recklessly and blame the Government and the traffic police for the chaos and accidents.

I agree many of the the roads of India are in deplorable condition and needs immediate attention but can we deny that’s it is partly our carelessness too. But we won’t admit it, its always very easy to stand at a distance and point fingers at everyone else and find faults with others as we conveniently overlook ours.

Nowadays people have become so selfish that even if they see a crime being committed or about to be committed right in front of their eyes they don’t bother to make any move and later they blame it on the police that’s it is their duty to prevent it and its due to failure on their part that it occurred.

A few days ago I read in the newspaper of a girl being dragged to a train by a group of guys in broad daylight in front of a fully packed station, no one bothered to come forward and raise a voice, they were busy with themselves. If the hundreds of people would have together confronted the 5 men an innocent girl’s life could have been saved. Who knows what terrible things might have befallen her, she might have been forced into marriage or sold to a brothel.

How did we become so self-centred and hard-hearted, how can possibly call ourselves human beings if our instincts don’t compel us to go forward and help when we see another person in trouble, we rather prefer to save our necks and flee. I wonder is it the same India whose people united to save their country, who laid down their lives to free her from the shackles to give her a better future?

Where is our courage, patriotism, spirit of freedom? We celebrate independence day every year, its true we have overthrown the British empire but are we free from our own vices, internal corruption which is gnawing at the roots of our progress?

In spite of being at par with the western world as far as technological advancement is concerned, our social system is still very medieval, we still cling on to the age old malpractices considering it as a part of our culture. We dress in western clothes, even try to imitate their accent, go to pubs as an attempt to westernize us but our minds and thoughts fail to progress-we still hear news of female foetus abortion, dowry deaths, witch burning and we claim to have progressed and go about boasting of our Indianness of our cultural values, ethics, heritage - we are such hypocrites.

We have started accepting all this as a part of India and don’t lose any chance to express our disappointment over almost everything about our country but are we doing anything to improve it’s condition, make it the way we want it to be, make it perfect, NO we are not, we shrink away from those responsibilities, we are only interested in earning bucks, so we run away to foreign lands to serve them.

If the best people of our country flock to foreign lands how can we expect India to become the best, it will always be of the mediocre status with the remaining less intelligent counterparts running our country. We say our ministers and police are corrupt officials who would do anything for money but we forget its people like us who go to make the government, the law and order system, but the temptation of money and power corrupt us and we forget the duties attached to the post we hold.

We can’t expect everything to change on its own if we don’t make a move and sit with our hands folded expecting someone else to do our job. But if each one of us who take the oath of sincerely serving our country truly mean it and swear to ourselves to do our job honestly cant we bring about a difference?

I am sure we can, not only the ministers, the policemen but if we the Aamjanta (common man) play our part as true citizens of this country we can bring about a revolutionary change in our whole system. Lets unite once again and commit ourselves to removing corruption from our country and am sure a day will come when the whole world will gaze in awe at us as we emerge as the most developed nation of the world equally progressive in social, spiritual and technological levels.

The things will not change with the will of one single person. People have to individually accept their responsibilities and learn to behave like a well mannered citizen.

Which is not possible with people uneducated enough. Education is the first thing that makes a person civilised. But then, it has to be blended with moral education as well. Otherwise, there's no chance of improvement in this country.

And what is the definition of true Indians? If it is corrupt and selfish, then yes we are... and i don't think humbleness and love is in our genes who are ready to kill each other on any damn reason.
